Dans l'Europe moderne, chaque ville est une île dont l'ultime idéal est la préservation de la paix publique. Des épisodes dramatiques, comme le massacre de la Saint-Barthélémy, témoignent de la rupture de ces équilibres fragiles, sous l'influence des lignes confessionnelles nouvelles, venues se superposer à une diversité religieuse préexistante dans de nombreuses régions de la chrétienté. Pourtant les conflits violents n'étaient pas l'unique réponse à la division des fidèles.
Ce livre analyse la polysémie de la coexistence. L'Europe des XVIe-XVIIIe siècles, de Vilnius à Malaga, d'Amsterdam à Livourne, ne se réduit pas à la seule chrétienté. La variété des situations qui en découle dépasse les oppositions binaires (catholiques contre protestants, chrétiens contre musulmans, chrétiens contre juifs etc.) sur lesquelles on se focalise d'ordinaire. L'espace urbain - carrefour économique, intellectuel, social - est aussi le lieu privilégié de la production et de l'inscription des différences.
Il est le laboratoire d'observation des multiples frictions possibles, dans les pratiques et les arrangements quotidiens de ses populations. À cette échelle, le modèle de la confessionnalisation révèle à la fois son intérêt et ses limites. Il laisse entrevoir les nombreuses pièces d'une mosaïque identitaire complexe, sans tenir compte de la dynamique changeante des rapports entre les habitants, qui brouille la frontière, à certains moments, et la renégocie sans cesse au service du bien commun.
En complément, quatre mises au point thématiques situent l'étude de la coexistence urbaine dans les débats historiographiques actuels.
